Yikes! It's Almost the New Year

Are you so bogged down with Christmas shopping that you've forgotten New Year's and resolution time is just around the corner? Now's the time to be making your short list for a possible New Year's resolution, so that when the day actually comes, you're not left stammering.

The faithful standby, and one which I sadly need to make, is the popular lose weight resolution. The problem with that one is that we forget about it all too soon, and by February (at the latest), we're right back to our old habits.

How about the I'm-going-to-get-published-this-year resolution? It is a fine one, no doubt about it. But to have that resolution, you have to have it backed up with other smaller resolutions: finish the work in progress, write a killer query letter and synopsis, and send it out to various agents and/or publishers.

That means, of course, that you know how to write those killer words. Ach! That means more resolutions: learning all you can and practicing like heck.

With all this in mind, it seems like we need to work on getting ourselves positioned to make the right New Year's resolution right now! How about you? Have you thought of it yet? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Hi Katie:

Great topic! I for one need to give myself that kick in the pants and finish the edits on my manuscript, research publishers and agents and get this darn thing done! Oh and yes, finalize my marketing plan for my first story book due to be released mid-2010.

I've allowed myself to be distracted the last several months and I MUST start treating my writing as my JOB and not allow errands, dust bunnies, chatty phone calls, etc., get in the way.

Best wishes for a Very Merry Christmas and Blessed New Year!

Regards,
Donna

I stopped making resolutions years ago when I discovered it was a fruitless effort on my part. Instead, I see the New Year as a new start, and strive to achieve something I didn't in the year past. I haven't failed myself yet. Of course I didn't start the year looking for the pounds I found, but dang...was I ever successful. :)

Like the topic. I try to do resolutions each season, so I've done mine already for winter. Last night I finished the first draft of my current wip! Dipped into the nog a little early.

I don't make resolutions, but I have a constant goal of being more forgiving and less judgmental. This is not a resolution but a daily admonishment.

I'm like Ginger, I don't make resolutions anymore. I do, however, always set goals for myself that are broken down into more manageable chunks and then broekn down farther into to-do lists.

May all of us reach our goals in 2010!

I've been working my butt off for the last 4 months and have gotten my New Year's resolution out of the way early - I've been weightlifting, and for the first time in my life can do a pullup!
