I'm Not an Old Hag

Today was the big day. Kinda like the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade where they spend all that money and time on floats, gussied up in their finest wear.

Okay, so seriously, it wasn't quite that big, but big enough. I'm one who is almost fiercely dedicated to not getting their picture taken. Age before beauty, right? I think the beauty part passed me by, and all that is left is the age! Today was THE day I was getting my picture taken for my book.

I think my kids were laughing at me, cause about an hour and a half before the photographer came to our house (yes, some do still do that), I started the ball rolling. Nice, hot shower. Wondrous smelling soaps (unless you're allergic to them like I am), the whole hair treatment: color (shh, don't tell), shampoo, lots of gel, hair dryer, curling iron...well, my list is getting kinda long, isn't it? That's without the make-up.

Yep, I admit I am vain. Even an old lady like me (51...shh, don't tell that either) likes to put her best foot forward. Last night, my husband and I hit Wal-Mart with a shopping list that ultimately cost us just shy of $85. Make-up didn't used to cost that much. Gulp. Serious hit in the old wallet.

But, with all the new make-up in the new make-up bag, my two daughters fussed over me, magically erasing all my freckles, making my small mouth pouty instead of well, small. Too bad they couldn't do anything about those irritating wrinkles.

Knock, knock. Who's there? Photographer! We got some great shots on our digital camera of the whole process. Then I smiled, laughed, looked serious, looked stupid...until we were all done. Managed to get some decent pictures there in spite of myself. Now all I have to do is wait for the proofs and pay more money. A great experience, and we all had fun.

Sounds like an awesome day. I hate having my picture taken, especially since I put on all this weight and well, the wrinkles, sigh, growing old just isn't fun.

I quit wearing makeup every day about 10 years ago. The idea of having it replaced is daunting it won't be cheap.

I'm needing to get promotional pictures, too. I'm too cheap to pay for a photographer. I love digital cameras. At least I can see if I've got any good pics immediately. Instead of waiting for them to get developed. Thank God for technology.

Blessings,

The professional photographer thing is a mixed bag for me. I had my illustrator photos taken during the same session as my engagement photos so I'd only have to pay for one visit. The engagement photos were hilarious because the photographer had my fiance (now husband) and I pose and gaze at each other in ways that we just don't do. We kept one of those silly photos for our own amusement because it always makes me laugh, even though everybody else thinks it's such a sweet picture.

I also hate having my picture made and the first (and only) time I saw myself on TV...well I don't want to even go there but talk about wrinkles! I'm looking forward to seeing the results of your efforts. Oh, and 51 is NOT old!

No fear. Good photographers can magically erase wrinkles and dark circles under the eyes also. I may need that this time around. You're still young, Katie. It could be worse. You could be 60 like me.

I may splurge for a professional photo at Love is Murder for $50.00
I'll already have makeup and good clothes on anyway, so why waste it!

Once I had a glamor shot done but instead of feathers or leather, I brought my own tops to wear. My make up and hair was done by the beauty shop where the photos were taken. Came out wonderful. Used the best one as my author photo for years--until people started looking at it and then me with a quizzical expression.

LOL! The photos I use were taken at my daughter's wedding. I've been waiting for someone to catch on. She has been married for five years.

Sixty isn't old either, try 69!

Okay all you golden oldies... Don't get yer britches in such an uproar. I ran into a problem with photographers that never seems to stop. When you get the photo taken by a photographer, they inevitably want to copyright it, and then... what do you do about using it on your website and all those promo dealies?

I have to get written release every time I use mine. So, the one on my website I took with my arm stretched out in front of me - the white line behind me is the picture window that I gaze out of when I can't find a word. Always works great!!! Love that photo.

You'd never know I was wearing just a black 'teddy' and a black knit shawl. I keep wondering if anyone notices, then realizing there are SO many out there who would be writing about it if they knew... LOL (now they do).

What's this, 51 is old? I don't think so. My wife and I are 130 -- well, 65 each -- and I don't consider us old.

So be good to yourself, young lady. :- )
