Update on grandson

I'm not going to write about writing today, at least I don't think so. You know, I've said it before and I'll say it again: life happens.

My 2-year-old grandson, Miles, fell last week and broke his femur up near the hip bone. He is in a full body cast and miserable. He can't get around on his own, he is barely eating or drinking, and gets pulled around in a wagon.

We all know adults and teens can get depressed, but I believe our younger folks can, too. A few years ago I had foot surgery. I was very depressed because I could hardly get from the bed to a wheelchair. I think Miles is depressed, too. He can't sit up, he can't walk, he can't get around on his own. Holding him is a major deal.

Yesterday my husband and I took him to the mall. We just loaded his wagon up and pillows. He ate a little bit at the restaurant, but smiled and talked all the way home from the mall. It was the first I'd heard him say much of anything since the accident.

The whole body cast is for 8 very long weeks. My daughter and her partner are stretched to the max taking care of him, and that doesn't even take into consideration their 2-month-old baby. I suggested they trade off: one for one hour with Miles, the other one hour with the baby, then switch. Sounds good to me, but I don't know if they're going to do it or not.

I want to say a heartfelt "thanks" to all who have been praying for them, and ask you please send up more when you think about their little family.

Little ones are so tough unlike us oldies. Prayers continue until the cast is finally off.

I'm so sorry to hear about your grandson's accident, Katie. It's so scary when our children and grandchildren get hurt. He's so young to have to go through such an ordeal. I will keep him and his family in my thoughts, and I hope he gets well soon.

Katie,

I'm not sure if you've already considered this, but animal therapy can get through when other things cannot. Contact your nearest humane society and ask about animal-assisted therapy programs in your area.

If there are any dogs in wheelchairs, that would be especially helpful. I bet Miles would be able to relate to how similar their situations are.

This is a tough time for your family. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Aloha,
Alina Niemi

I think the hardest part is watching them suffer. As parents we want to make everything better. As grandparents we want to make everything better while making them laugh at the same time. It's a tall order. But you and your husband did a good thing, Katie. Bet, even at his age, he'll never forget it.

Thanks for the update. I have been thinking a lot about that little one! Trying to think of "toddler" art projects... I used to put a little food coloring in instant pudding and let them finger paint. Play Dough is a good activity, too. I'm sure your daughter and her partner will think of some ways to keep him engaged and do their best to keep his spirits up. Good Luck! Kids heal fast... Parents? not so sure.

Best,
Lisa

Poor little guy! I hope he feels better soon. At least, when the casts come off, he can really look forward to: getting a good scratching session, a real bath, and running and playing will be that much more fun!
