I'm scheduled to be on a podcast in September. I had NO clue as to what I was signing up for, but I've heard of them, and decided it would be a great marketing tool...I hoped.
Here's the podcast is in a nutshell: Podcasts are radio shows that you can download and listen to whenever you want. According to Wikipedia, special client utilities are known as podcatchers, and automatically "identify and download newfiles in the series whenthey are released." You can use the iTunes utility (and others are out there as well) to subscribe to any new show that appeals to you. You can also listen to podcasts on your computer, or add them to your mp3 player. You can even get automatic updates to your subscription when new podcasts are available.
The word "podcast" refers to the content or the method by which the content is captured, or syndicated. A "podcaster" is the person who creates that content.
Some statistics say that over half of the podcast listeners do so using their iPod, which is where the word "podcasting" came from. Podcasts cover a wide area of subjects, like music, sport commentaries, and so forth. There is actually no limit to the number of podcasts you can download. ITunes podcasts are all free of charge. There's even an iTunes podcast directory available.

I have my favorite podcasts that I listen to on my way home from work when I am tired of hearing the news! Let me know your link and I can add you to my list!
Katie,
Thanks for the basics about podcasting. I don't know anything about them but I know a lot of people are using them for promotion.
I'm glad to read your post and get a better idea of what they are.
Dianne
Looking forward to your podcast, Katie. I've just begun the "learning experience."
